KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli has pledged to establish Nepali Consulate General in California soon.
Prime Minister Oli, who is currently in the United States to attend the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, reaffirmed this commitment after meeting with Nepali community organizations, in New York.
These groups have been advocating for a consulate in California, where approximately 100,000 Nepalis reside.
The Nepali diaspora emphasized the need for a consular office in San Francisco, given the significant distance to the current consulates in New York and Washington, D.C.
The establishment of a Consulate General would help address various challenges faced by the Nepalese community, particularly in matters such as passport renewals.
Prime Minister Oli responded positively to these requests, assuring that the Nepalese government will make a decision soon.
“You can move forward with confidence. We have already considered opening a Nepali Consulate General in California soon,” he stated.
Additionally, the demand letter highlighted California’s status as a hub of science and technology, particularly Silicon Valley, suggesting that establishing a consulate could foster commercial and technological benefits for Nepal and its diaspora.
The Nepali delegation also met with Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana to reiterate their request and invited her to visit California.
