NHRC urges against appointment of controversial figures to public office

KATHMANDU; The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called upon the Constitutional Council and state agencies to refrain from appointing individuals embroiled in social and moral controversies.

In a statement issued Wednesday, NHRC spokesperson Tikaram Pokharel emphasized that appointing socially and legally contentious individuals undermines the rule of law, fosters impunity, and erodes public trust in state institutions.

“The NHRC has noted with concern reports that the Government of Nepal, the Constitutional Council, and various state bodies are considering appointments of individuals currently under investigation for various charges, including criminal offenses, to high-ranking positions in executive, constitutional, and public bodies,” the statement read.

While not specifying the responsible agencies, the Commission underscored the need for adherence to democratic principles and constitutional values in all appointments.

“The Commission instructs relevant authorities, including the Government of Nepal, to avoid appointing individuals involved in disputes that contradict democratic norms and constitutional principles,” Pokharel stated.
