Nepal’s foreign trade falls 3.96% as both imports and exports drop

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s foreign trade has declined by 3.96 percent in the first three months of the current fiscal year compared to the same period last year, according to the Customs Department.

The report indicates that both imports and exports have fallen during this period. Imports decreased by 4.17 percent, while exports dropped by 6.11 percent. In total, Nepal imported goods worth Rs 390.75 billion from mid-July to mid-October. During the same period, Nepal exported goods worth Rs 38.37 billion.

The primary imports during this period included diesel valued at Rs 22.15 billion, petrol at Rs 16.62 billion, and cooking LP gas at Rs 14.64 billion. Additionally, mobile phones accounted for Rs 9.83 billion in imports, and urea fertilizer imports reached Rs 7.93 billion.

India remains Nepal’s largest trading partner, with imports amounting to Rs 240 billion. China follows, with imports valued at Rs 78.63 billion. Notably, goods worth Rs 6.51 billion were imported from Ukraine, a country currently embroiled in conflict. Australia, Argentina, and the USA also feature among Nepal’s key import sources.
