KMC launches river cleaning drive amid persistent pollution challenges

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolis has initiated a river cleaning campaign, deploying 55 employees from the Environment Department at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office.

The drive aims to clean several rivers including Rudramati (Dhobi Khola), Khahare (a seasonal river in Kapan), Bhachaakhushi in the Balaju area, and Ichchhumati (Tukucha).

Currently, the team has focused on cleaning the Tukucha River for a week.

Supervisor Sagar Luintel noted that Tukucha has accumulated more garbage compared to other rivers they have worked on.

For Rudramati, authorities utilized machinery to aid in trash collection.

Laxman Dhakal from Kapan mentioned that despite initial cleaning efforts, Rudramati is facing renewed garbage issues, underscoring the need for local authorities to enforce regulations and enhance public awareness to sustain river cleanliness and prevent future pollution.

Rivers in the Kathmandu Valley have long suffered from encroachment, serving as dumping sites for sewage and garbage, leading to severe pollution issues.

Despite the Bagmati River Cleaning initiative launched on May 19, 2013, at the civic level, significant results have yet to be achieved.
