KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli extended congratulations to the players and managers of Janakpur Bolts, winners of the inaugural Nepal Premier League (NPL), during a felicitation ceremony held at his official residence in Baluwatar on Sunday morning.

The Janakpur Bolts clinched the title after defeating Sudurpaschim Royals by five wickets in the final at the Tribhuvan University cricket ground in Kirtipur.

Oli praised the team’s outstanding performance, which he said played a crucial role in raising the standard of Nepali cricket. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) officials and managers for their support.

Congratulating the players, PM Oli said, “This victory is for all Nepalis. It is a win for Nepali cricket. Your exceptional ability has been showcased through this championship. I also commend the Sudurpaschim Royals for their strong performance. The Janakpur Bolts, in particular, deserve special recognition for overcoming tough challenges to secure this victory.”

Oli also encouraged the team to continue their pursuit of success, emphasizing the importance of maintaining self-confidence, skills, and enthusiasm to demonstrate that Nepalis can become renowned players on the global cricket stage.

In his address, Oli also mentioned that his first decision upon assuming office was to upgrade the Kirtipur cricket ground. He confirmed that a tender process had already begun for the development project and reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing sports in Nepal.

During the event, CAN and sports managers raised concerns about the cumbersome processes involved in bringing foreign players, investment, and assistance into Nepal. In response, Oli assured that the government would address these issues to make the process smoother.

CAN President Chatur Bahadur Chand expressed gratitude for the government’s prioritization of cricket and urged the government to streamline the process for issuing labor permits for top foreign players.

Janakpur Bolts captain Aasif Sheikh expressed the team’s gratitude for the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister and receive the felicitation.
