KATHMANDU: A lawsuit has been filed against Medicity Hospital in Lalitpur following the death of a patient, Gyan Prasad Rimal, from Banasthali, Kathmandu, who was undergoing treatment.
The patient’s family is demanding compensation of Rs 50 million, alleging that medical negligence and the administration of incorrect medication led to his death.
Rimal, who had been residing in the United States, returned to Nepal for heart treatment and kidney dialysis. He was admitted to Medicity Hospital on September 17 but passed away on September 20.
According to the family, an initial heart examination revealed a blockage, and doctors advised an angiogram, which was performed on September 18 by Dr Ranjit Kumar Sharma’s team. The procedure was deemed successful, and Rimal was transferred to the ICU.
The family claims that, despite reassurances from the hospital staff, Rimal’s condition worsened. On September 19, they observed that his hand had become swollen and discolored, and later, painful swelling began to appear. On September 20 morning, the hospital allegedly informed the family that Rimal’s hand was simply allergic to tape and was bleeding. The family argues that the hospital was concealing the full extent of his condition.
The situation escalated, and the family was informed that an emergency hand operation was performed. However, Rimal died soon after the operation due to excessive bleeding. The family has accused the hospital of negligence, claiming that the medical team’s use of incorrect medication and the failure to properly communicate the patient’s deteriorating condition led to Rimal’s death.
In the lawsuit, the family also alleges that after Rimal’s death, the hospital tried to cover up the incident by not charging any fees for his treatment and offering a discount of Rs 700,000. They argue that this was an attempt to minimize the hospital’s liability and conceal the circumstances of his death.
