KATHMANDU: Chairman of Maoist Center and leader of the main opposition party, Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” has accused the government of prioritizing its own survival while targeting rivals under the guise of good governance.
Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Prachanda expressed concerns over the government’s shortcomings in promoting genuine governance.
The meeting was convened in preparation for a protest rally scheduled for October 26 in Kathmandu.
Prachanda differentiated the Maoist Center from the ruling Nepali Congress-UML coalition, asserting that his previous leadership had promoted good governance without bias, unlike the current administration, which he claims is focused solely on undermining its opponents.
In a recent exchange with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at Baluwatar, Prachanda stated, “I asked him—what is the difference between you and us? You protect Congress and UML leaders despite their mistakes, yet you actively target your political rivals.”
He criticized the government for failing to address pressing issues, suggesting it is more concerned with political maneuvering than effective governance.
Prachanda remarked that although the government’s “honeymoon period” has not yet seen significant public engagement, now that it has reached 100 days in power, the opposition’s demonstration plans are moving forward.
Highlighting the accomplishments of his party during its 18 months in power, he claimed that public enthusiasm has waned, as citizens recognize a new political dynamic that seemingly protects the corrupt.
He pointed to a growing anti-government sentiment, fueled by a series of alleged misdeeds.
Prachanda accused the government of acting as a shield for corrupt individuals, citing various issues including land donation scandals, attempts to dismiss officials over minor errors, and negligence in disaster response following recent floods.
Prachanda also criticized the government’s adherence to a two-party system, labeling it an autocratic mindset that persists within the coalition.
