Nepal government lifts ban on TikTok

The Nepalese government has lifted the ban on the popular video-sharing platform TikTok. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday. This move comes after TikTok’s office sent a letter to the government, committing to adhere to Nepalese laws and legal processes. The ban was originally imposed last year under then Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda.’ The decision to lift the ban was proposed by Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung. With the ban now lifted, TikTok will resume operations across the country.

Supreme Court orders removal of 30-year service term for Nepal Police

The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an order to remove the 30-year service term limitation for Nepal Police personnel. On Wednesday, police officers set to retire on September 1 due to the 30-year service rule filed a writ petition with the apex court. Following the hearing, a bench led by Judge Hari Phuyal issued an interim order suspending the enforcement of the 30-year service term policy. The court has directed that retirement letters be put on hold and that the affected police personnel continue their duties.

Nepal defeats Bangladesh, secures spot in SAFF U-20 Championship semi-finals

Nepal has advanced to the semi-finals of the SAFF U-20 Championship as the Group ‘A’ winner. On Thursday, Nepal defeated Bangladesh 2-1 to secure their spot. Despite the loss, Bangladesh finished in second place in the group but also progressed to the semi-finals. Sri Lanka, the third team in the group, has been eliminated.

National Assembly passes TRC Bill

The National Assembly passed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Bill on Thursday. Presented for endorsement by Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya, the bill was unanimously approved by the assembly. The bill seeks to amend the Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act (third amendment) – 2079 BS.

Over 500 houses inundated in Kailali

Heavy rains have severely impacted Kailali, causing widespread flooding. Many areas, including Bhajani, Joshipur, Janaki, Ghodaghodi, and Gouriganga, have been submerged. According to Shivraj Joshi, Information Officer at the District Administration Office, over 500 houses have been inundated, and more than 1,700 residents have been affected. Joshi reported that more than 400 houses in Bhajani have been flooded, and areas in Hasuliya and Gauriganga have been affected by the rising waters. Some residents have sought refuge at the local ward office.

Buffalo kills a tiger in Makawanpur

 A domestic buffalo reared by a famer in Manahari, Makawanpur has killed a tiger. A buffalo owned Bal Bahadur Rai of Manahari rural municipality-6, Pratappur killed the tiger that came out of Chitwan National Park (CNP). CNP’s Information Officer Ganesh Prasad Tiwari said that the tiger died in retaliation to the buffalo this morning. The buffalo was injured in the tiger attack. This is the first such incident in the park and its buffer zone.

Misappropriation of Cooperative Funds: Parliamentary Inquiry Committee to question Rabi Lamichhane tomorrow

The Parliamentary Inquiry Special Committee, which is investigating the misappropriation of cooperative funds, will question Rabi Lamichhane, Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), on August 23. Lamichhane is under investigation for alleged embezzlement involving funds from the Suryadarshan Cooperative in Pokhara, Supreme Cooperative in Butwal, and Sahara Cooperative in Chitwan, with claims that these funds were diverted through Gorkha Media. The Committee is also collecting statements from directors and shareholders of nearly 100 problematic cooperatives nationwide, including those mentioned.

Two arrested for detonating IED

Two persons have been arrested as they tried to flee after detonating an Improvised Explosive Device (Sutali Bomb) at the Ghorahi-based Mahendra Multiple Campus this morning. Spokesperson for the District Police Office, Deputy Superintendent Ram Prasad Timilsina said that one of the two persons who came on a motorcycle threw the IED and they were arrested when they were fleeing soon after.

Complaint filed against Foreign Minister Arzu Rana at CIAA

Yubraj Safal has lodged a complaint against Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba at the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA). Safal has accused Minister Rana of being involved in both the fake Bhutanese refugee scam and the Tikapur land irregularities. He has argued that Rana should step down from her position on moral grounds until she is acquitted by the court of the charges against her. Safal has called for an immediate investigation into Minister Rana and has demanded her resignation.

NEPSE index edges up 0.20 percent

The NEPSE Index saw a slight increase of 0.20 percent on Thursday, closing at 2,974.46 points, up by 6.01 points from the previous session. Yesterday, the index had a modest rise of 2.11 points, ending at 2,968.44 points. Today’s trading session began with the index at 2,974.78 points and experienced notable fluctuations, peaking at 3,018.93 points and dipping to 2,967.47 points before closing at its final value. The day was marked by significant trading activity, with 333 stocks traded through 216,455 transactions, totaling 40,951,720 shares and generating a turnover of Rs. 19.16 billion.

Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana returns to Nepal

Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba returned to Nepal on Thursday, concluding her five-day official visit to India. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Minister Rana described India as a good neighbor and characterized her visit as successful. During her visit, Rana extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Nepal soon. “PM Modi responded positively to the invitation and has agreed to visit Nepal in the near future,” Rana said.

PM Oli denies SPP proposal during recent visit by US official

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli clarified that no proposal regarding the State Partnership Program (SPP) was made by the US Government during the recent visit of Richard R. Verma, the US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources. Responding to a question from CPN (Maoist Center) lawmaker Purna Bahadur Gharti in Parliament, PM Oli stated that his discussions with Deputy Secretary Verma focused on bilateral relations and cooperation between the two nations. He emphasized that no proposal or discussions regarding the SPP took place during their meeting.

Father commits suicide after son goes missing in Russian army

Ronal Mishra, a resident of Belbhari Municipality-11 in the Morang district, who enlisted in the Russian army, has gone missing. According to Kritu Bhandari, the coordinator of the ‘Campaign for the Protection of Nepalis Involved in the Russian Army,’ Mishra has been uncontactable since November 21. Tragically, after losing contact with his son, Raj Kumar Mishra, Ronal’s father, committed suicide on Thursday.
