KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has fined Bhatbhateni Supermarket in Tripureshwor after a complaint revealed the sale of stale and rotten food items.

The issue came to light when the Metropolitan City’s call center received a complaint on December 4 regarding the supermarket’s food quality.

Following an inspection, KMC determined that the supermarket violated Section 29, Clauses (d) and (e) of the Metropolitan City Market Management and Monitoring Act, 2021.

A letter issued to the supermarket states that a fine of Rs 200,000 has been imposed under Section 30 (1), (b) of the same act.

KMC has directed Bhatbhateni to deposit the fine into its revenue account and ensure compliance with food quality standards as per prevailing laws.

KMC said such practices will not be tolerated and urged businesses to adhere to high standards of hygiene and quality in the interest of public health.
