KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has secured a vote of confidence from Parliament.
Having been appointed Prime Minister with the support of the Nepali Congress (NC) on July 14, he has received a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
Oli presented the confidence motion in accordance with Article 76(4) of the Constitution of Nepal and Rule 155 of the House of Representatives Rules of Procedure, 2079.
Accordingly, he received 188 votes in favor, including those from the NC and other parties. There were 74 votes against him.
A total of 263 members were present in Parliament today.
Out of the total votes, 192 were cast in his favor by seven parties and three independent MPs.
Among those in favor, 88 votes came from Nepali Congress members and 76 from CPN-UML members.
Two UML MPs did not vote.
Basant Kumar Nembang from Panchthar was absent due to illness, and Top Bahadur Rayamajhi from Arghakhanchi is in jail over the fake Bhutanese refugee case.
Oli received support from six MPs of the Janamat Party led by Dr. CK Raut, seven MPs of the Janata Samajbadi Party led by Ashok Rai, five MPs from the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal led by Upendra Yadav, four MPs from the Nagarik Unmukti Party, and four MPs from the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party.
Among these, Nagarik Unmukti, Janamat, and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal are not part of the federal government.
Independent MPs Yogendra Mandal and Dr. Amresh Kumar Singh also voted in favor of Oli.
Opposition alliance
A total of 74 MPs stood against the Prime Minister.
Opposition votes included 32 from the CPN-Maoist Center, 21 from the Rastriya Swatantra Party, 14 from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and 10 from the CPN-Unified Socialist.
Additionally, Prabhu Sah from the Aam Janata Party and Prem Suwal from the Nepal Workers Peasants Party, along with Chitra Bahadur KC from the Rastriya Janamorcha, also voted against Oli.
To secure a two-thirds majority, Oli needed 184 votes.
He received 188 votes, surpassing the required majority.
As per constitutional provisions, the Prime Minister is required to obtain a vote of confidence from Parliament within 30 days of appointment.
With 275 members in the House of Representatives, 138 votes were needed for a majority, but Oli received a two-thirds majority.
