KATHMANDU: Nepali students have begun returning home from Bangladesh amid deadly student protests there.

Bangladeshi authorities extended a curfew across the country on Sunday due to violent clashes between police and protesters, resulting in numerous casualties.

The nationwide demonstrations, primarily organized by student groups, started weeks ago in protest against a quota system that reserves up to 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971.

Violence erupted on Tuesday, and according to the Daily Prothom Alo newspaper, at least 103 people have been reported dead as of Saturday.

However, Bangladeshi authorities have not released official numbers of those killed and injured.
