KATHMANDU: The Tarai and hilly regions are grappling with the adverse effects of prolonged drought conditions.
The escalating heat and arid climate have contributed to a surge in fire incidents in various areas.
Reports have emerged of devastating fires wreaking havoc on livestock, food supplies, and properties in several locations.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Manohar Bhatta, spokesperson for the District Police Office Rupandehi, reported a significant fire outbreak last night in Bhairahawa, Rupandehi.
The fire, originating from dry wheat stalks, quickly spread to nine villages in Rohini Rural Municipality-6, Rupandehi district.
Affected areas include Bishnupura, Parsa, Buchi, Barawa, Tarkulaha, Kotahawa, Chamkipur, and Piprahawa. Although no human casualties were reported, 40 houses were razed, and 39 goats perished in the blaze.
The fire was eventually brought under control through collaborative efforts involving the police, Armed Police Force, Nepali Army, and local residents, with support from the fire brigade of Devdaha Municipality.
According to Spokesperson Bhatta, fire incidents have been reported throughout the district, including a significant fire in Gaidahawa Rural Municipality that resulted in extensive property damage.
Fire engulfs 28 structures in Gulmi
A report from Tamghas, Gulmi, reveals the destruction of 28 structures, including houses, shops, and cowsheds, by a forest fire in Gulmi district.
The fire, which blazed from Friday until Saturday night, ravaged properties in wards 1, 2, and 4 of Isma Rural Municipality and Gulmidurbar Rural Municipality.
Shankar Prasad Pokhrel, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Gulmi, stated that the fire, originating in the Rani Community Forest at Sindukha, Isma Rural Municipality-2, spread rapidly to nearby settlements.
The inferno caused extensive damage to residences and animal shelters, resulting in the loss of a dozen cattle.
Additionally, a fire originating from a nearby forest partially damaged the electricity substation at Birbas, Gulmidarbar Rural Municipality-4, on Friday.
Prompt action by security personnel and local residents prevented further destruction, although the substation incurred approximately Rs 20 million in damages.
Similarly, a report from Birgunj, Parsa, details a fire ignited in a wheat field across the border in India, which engulfed thatched-roof houses, food supplies, and crops in Bhalamahiya settlement, Chhipaharmai Rural Municipality-1, Parsa district.
The disaster caused substantial property and food grain losses amounting to hundreds of thousands of rupees.
The fire, which began at 3:00 PM on Saturday, rapidly spread to the settlement, consuming wheat crops, hay, chicken farms, and the residences of 15 farmers.
The estimated damage exceeds one million and eighty-four thousand rupees, as reported by the police.
