Mahara denies involvement in gold smuggling case

KATHMANDU: Krishna Bahadur Mahara, former Speaker of the Parliament and Vice Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center), has reiterated his non-involvement in the gold smuggling case.

Currently receiving medical treatment at Norvic Hospital in Kathmandu after his arrest, Mahara provided his statement to the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) on Thursday.

Mahara’s arrest came amid suspicions of his connection to a gold smuggling operation, following recommendations from the Gold Smuggling Probe Commission to file a case against him.

The Kathmandu District Court granted Mahara permission to remain in the hospital following his arrest.

With the court’s order, the CIB is currently investigating the case letting Mahara undergo treatment at the hospital.
