KATHMANDU: Chairman of Maoist Centre Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has stated that the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) serves as the foundation for the Constituent Assembly (CA), the federal democratic republic, and inclusive democracy in Nepal.

In a statement today marking the 18th anniversary of the CPA, signed between the then government and the CPN (Maoist), leader Dahal emphasized that the CPA marked the beginning of a new era in Nepal’s history.

“Today is a day to remember and honor,” he said, paying tribute to both the known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the ‘People’s War’, the People’s Movement, the Madhesh Movement, and other struggles for the establishment of a federal democratic republic.

Dahal also reminded that some aspects of the peace process remain unfinished. He added that during his tenure as Prime Minister, bills related to truth and reconciliation, as well as the investigation into enforced disappearances, were finalized.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress being made in transitional justice.

He further stated that mutual collaboration and cooperation are underway to complete the remaining tasks of the peace process and present Nepal as a model of peace.

Despite the progress made, Dahal acknowledged that the people’s expectations for development and prosperity have yet to be fully realized.

He called for continued efforts, with renewed determination, to promote good governance, social justice, and prosperity. For this, he suggested that further revisions to the Constitution could be considered.

Dahal also recognized the contributions of political parties, civil society, and the public in advancing the peace process.

The CPA was signed on November 21, 2006 (Mangsir 5, 2063 BS) by then Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala, representing the seven political parties, and Dahal, the Chair of the then CPN (Maoist).
