Cabinet meeting postponed as top leaders of Congress and UML hold talks

KATHMANDU: The Cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening has been postponed. Senior leaders of the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are now engaged in internal discussions.

Following Monday’s dialogue, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba have resumed talks at Baluwatar, according to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

The Congress delegation includes President Deuba, General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa, and Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba.

Representing UML are Prime Minister Oli, Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel, and PM’s Chief Advisor and UML Deputy General Secretary Bishnu Rimal, among others.

Monday’s discussions revolved around reshuffling Cabinet members, the Prime Minister’s upcoming China visit, and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

With PM Oli scheduled to visit China on December 2 (Mangsir 17), both parties are striving to establish a unified stance on BRI.

Congress has emphasized converting BRI financing into grants, while UML remains flexible, advocating for concessional loans comparable to those from other donor agencies.

The leaders also deliberated on replacing underperforming ministers, with both Congress and UML preparing to make changes.

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, Deuba held separate discussions with Congress General Secretaries Bishwo Prakash Sharma and Gagan Thapa at Budhanilkantha.

On Monday, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak also met Deuba at Budhanilkantha.
