KATHMANDU: The United States has committed to donating two M28 Skytrucks, valued at approximately $37 million, to Nepal by January 2025.

These short take-off and landing fixed-wing planes include one specially equipped as a dedicated air ambulance, marking a first for Nepal.

The aid package also encompasses training for pilots and maintenance personnel, along with parts support, according to a statement from the US Embassy in Kathmandu.

This contribution is part of a broader effort by the US to bolster disaster recovery and relief capabilities in Nepal, reflecting a deepening bilateral relationship between the two nations.

The US has previously pledged three different grants through the Department of State for this purpose.

In 2022, the US agreed to supply Nepal with two Bell 412 helicopters, with a combined value of $44 million, including pilot and maintainer training as well as logistics support. These helicopters are expected to be delivered in the coming years.

Additionally, during a visit last week, US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma announced a further commitment of $100 million in grant assistance.

This new funding will support the acquisition of additional helicopters, training, and support equipment, pending congressional notification and availability of funds.

Both governments are collaborating to ensure that the aircraft are tailored to meet Nepal’s specific needs for disaster relief and recovery, the statement added.
