Supreme Court declines to impose restrictions on security personnel using metal bullets

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has rejected a plea to issue an order restricting security personnel from using metal bullets and other potentially lethal equipment to control public gatherings and demonstrations.

During a hearing on a writ petition presented by senior advocate Dinesh Triphati, Justice Kumar Chundal declined to issue an interim order.

Triphati’s petition argued that the deployment of lethal equipment by security personnel during protests had resulted in fatalities among the general public.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, security personnel may continue to be authorized to use metal bullets while managing crowds in public spaces.

Notably, three individuals have lost their lives due to gunshot wounds fired by the police.

The court’s ruling raises discussions on the balance between maintaining public order and ensuring the protection of citizens during protests.
