KATHMANDU: Senior Advocate Ramesh Badal has been sworn in as the Attorney General.

The Chief Justice Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed Attorney General Badal in the presence of President Ram Chandra Poudel and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today.

Badal was appointed by President Ramchandra Paudel on the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Oli on Wednesday.

The Attorney General serves as the chief legal advisor to the government.

The constitutional provision allows the President to appoint the Attorney General based on the Prime Minister’s recommendation.

Previously, Dr. Dinmani Pokharel resigned from the position on July 14 following a change in government.

Pokharel, appointed at the recommendation of former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, resigned upon Prime Minister Oli’s appointment.

Badal was first appointed as the Attorney General on March 19, 2021, under the Oli government.

However, he resigned on July 13, 2021, after serving for approximately four months following the Supreme Court’s verdict overturning the Oli government.

Badal is actively involved in coalition building between the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML.

From UML, General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali played roles in garnering consensus with the Congress. On July 1, Badal also participated in reaching a consensus with NC and UML at a businessman’s residence with seven agreements.
