Koshi Province Assembly: Resolution proposal to be registered amid political confusion

BIRATNAGAR: A session of the Koshi State Assembly has been called today amid ongoing political turmoil in the province.

Province Chief Parshuram Khapung has convened a session of the Provincial Assembly at 1 pm as per the demand of 52 MPs from the CPN-UML and Maoist Center.

The Koshi Province has been experiencing heightened political uncertainty since the Maoist Center and CPN-UML withdrew their support for Chief Minister Kedar Karki, leaving the provincial government in flux.

Chief Minister Karki has asserted that the constitution does not mandate his removal and claims he is not required to take a vote of confidence for two years.

On the other hand, the UML and Maoist Center have argued that following their withdrawal of support, the government is now a minority and must take a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly.

Chief Minister Karki has insisted that he does not need to seek another vote of confidence, as he became the Chief Minister in accordance with Article 168, Clause 5 of the Constitution.

He also contended that asking his resignation within two years after taking a vote of confidence is against the Constitution, as there is no provision for appointing another chief minister in his place.

Karki, from the Nepali Congress party, became Chief Minister with the support of the UML.

However, the UML and Maoists have already withdrawn their support.

With changes in the power dynamics at the center, parties in the new power equation seek ways to remove Karki.

The UML and Maoist Center have filed a resolution proposal following the Chief Minister’s refusal to resign.

The resolution proposal will be registered with amendments in the Koshi Provincial Assembly.
