KATHMANDU: In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming local by-elections on December 1, the two opposition parties, Maoist Center and Unified Socialist, have joined forces.
On Sunday, both parties submitted their candidacies in coordination for two local constituencies in the Kathmandu district.
As part of the agreement, Maoist Center’s candidate for Mayor of Kirtipur, Prof. Dr. Shiva Sharan Maharjan, will contest with the backing of the Unified Socialist.
In return, the Maoist Center has pledged its support to Min Manandhar, the Unified Socialist Party’s candidate for Kathmandu Metropolitan City-16.
This by-election follows the untimely death of Nepali Congress candidate Mukunda Rizal, who had previously won the seat.
The alliance was formalized on Saturday evening, when Chairman of the Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, and Senior Vice Chair of the Unified Socialist Party, Rajendra Pandey, reached an agreement.
