KATHMANDU: The Embassy of Nepal in Canada has issued directives for Nepali students aspiring to study in Canada.

In a press statement aimed at those pursuing higher education in Canada, the embassy provided the following advice:

1. It is advisable for students to carefully study the informative notice issued by this embassy on Baisakh 17, 2081 (April 29, 2024) before preparing to come to Canada.

This notice can be viewed on the Nepali Embassy’s website at https://ca.nepalembassy.gov.np, the Facebook page “Nepal Embassy, Ottawa,” and the X (formerly Twitter) account “Embassy of Nepal, Canada” (@nepal_of).

2) To reduce potential problems after arriving here, it is important to thoroughly research and understand information about the college you plan to attend, the subjects you will study, the costs involved, and the city where the college is located.

Students should be aware that coming to Canada without proper preparation, relying solely on unrealistic, insufficient, or exaggerated information, can lead to various difficulties.

3) Before coming to Canada for studies, it is advisable to gather sufficient information about the place you are going to, the nature of the studies, costs, availability of housing, employment opportunities, and other relevant factors.

This information can be obtained from relatives, friends, seniors or former students, student social media networks, and organizations such as the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRN) or other Nepali diaspora organizations in the relevant city.

Being well-prepared in this way can make it easier to handle any problems that may arise.

4) Parents should ensure that they have made proper arrangements for their children’s study, accommodation, and living expenses before sending them abroad.

Understanding the reality that many students in the past have faced difficulties due to the misconception that they will easily find a job as soon as they arrive in Canada, it is crucial to come to Canada only after arranging for the necessary funds to cover college or university tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses.

Failing to do so can lead to financial, educational, accommodation, and food-related stress, and the lack of job opportunities can cause psychological challenges for young students.

Therefore, both parents and students should take precautionary measures from the outset.

5) With the increasing number of students coming from around the world, there is immense pressure on student housing and employment opportunities throughout Canada, making it difficult to find accommodation and job opportunities.

Understanding this reality, it is advisable to secure accommodation before coming to Canada for studies.

Be cautious about the possibility of fraud when making advance payments for accommodation based solely on social media advertisements.

6) Since the weather in Canada can be extremely cold during the winter season, it is advisable to be informed about the local climate and make preparations accordingly.

7) For young students, who are relatively inexperienced, it can be overwhelming to manage everything on their own immediately after arriving in Canada.

This includes tasks like cooking, cleaning, shopping, transportation, and navigating the local environment.

Gaining prior knowledge about these aspects can make it easier to adapt to new circumstances that may arise suddenly.
