KATHMANDU: The Chinese national, arrested with 6 kg of gold, was found to possess Nepali citizenship.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the police arrested the Chinese from Kapan on Sunday.

He had obtained Nepali citizenship under the name Sonam Gurung.

Police have initiated an investigation into how he acquired the citizenship.

He is reportedly a member of a smuggling ring that conceals gold in various items to transport it through airports.

Along with the 6 kg of gold, police also seized Rs 4.8 million in unexplained cash from him.

According to CIB SP Hobindra Bogati, Gurung has been residing in Nepal for a long time and is involved in illegal crypto and USDT transactions.

This arrest is part of the second phase of CIB’s investigation into a 61 kg gold smuggling case, which has led to the apprehension of additional suspects.
