Foreign Secretary Lamsal recommended as Nepal’s Ambassador to Belgium
Sewa Lamsal, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been recommended for the position of Nepalese Ambassador to Belgium. The recommendation was made during a cabinet meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers at Singha Durbar last evening. Lamsal was appointed as the first female Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Home Minister directs IGP to investigate Gathaghar accident
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has instructed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Basanta Kunwar to conduct a thorough investigation into the vehicle accident that occurred at Gathaghar in Bhaktapur on Thursday. Home Minister Lekhak emphasized the need for a serious inquiry into the cause of the accident. Expressing his concern, Minister Lekhak stated, “We need to understand what happened in the Gathaghar accident. Who is responsible for this tragic event? Is there any fault on the part of our police force? This matter requires a serious investigation.” On Thursday afternoon, a scooter driver died on the spot after being struck by a truck near Gathaghar Chowk in Bhaktapur.
Foreign Minister Dr. Rana leaving for New Delhi next week
Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba is scheduled to travel to New Delhi next week for an official visit. This trip was originally delayed due to health issues rather than bilateral concerns. Dr. Rana underwent surgery for hyperparathyroidism on March 2024, at Max Hospital, New Delhi. She will be flying to New Delhi for a regular health check-up, and during this visit, the Indian side has formalized an invitation for her. A source close to Foreign Minister Rana mentioned, “She was initially preparing to go to New Delhi for a health check-up. Upon learning of this, the Indian side extended an invitation.”
RPP Chairman Lingden off to Australia
Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden has left here for Melbourne of Australia last night at the invitation of the party’s diaspora organization. RPP Spokesperson Mohan Kumar Shrestha said that Chairman Lingden is scheduled to attend party organization’s events in different cities in Australia. RPP leaders Ananda Adhikari and Hikmat Jung Karki have accompanied Chairman Lingden. Lingden is scheduled to return home on August 26.
Gold price up by Rs 900 per tola today
The price of gold has decreased by Rs 900 per tola in the domestic market today. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the fine gold is traded at Rs 149,600 per tola today. It should be noted that gold was traded at Rs 150,500 per tola per tola on Thursday. Additionally, the price of silver increased by Rs 20 per tola, with silver trading at 1,760 rupees per tola today.
US Deputy Secretary Verma meets with PM Oli
US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard R. Verma, held a meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Friday. Verma arrived in Kathmandu earlier today and is set to visit New Delhi, India, from August 17-22. During his visit to Nepal, Verma met with PM Oli at Singha Durbar shortly after his arrival. The US Embassy confirmed that Verma will engage in discussions with government leaders, officials, development professionals, and business leaders while in Nepal.
Gatthaghar Accident: Man arrested for falsely claiming victim as his sister
Police have arrested a man who falsely claimed that the victim of the Gatthaghar accident was his sister. The accident occurred on Thursday when a truck (Na 6 Kha 2173) struck a scooter (Ba 49 Pa 8944), dragging it for approximately 100 meters and severely mutilating the rider. The arrested individual, Shambu Nepali, 30, from Melung Rural Municipality-4 in Dolakha, was taken into custody last night. Police are preparing to file charges against him. He is currently being held in Thimi. The motive behind Nepali’s false claim remains unclear.
Govt to award Rs 300,000 each to players participating in CAVA Women’s Volleyball League
The government has announced a reward of Rs 300,000 each for the Nepali players who participated in the CAVA Women’s Volleyball Nations League, where Nepal finished as the runner-up while India clinched the title. During a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday, it was decided that 14 members of the Nepali volleyball team will receive the financial award. In addition to the players, the head coach will be awarded Rs 200,000, while the manager, assistant coach, and physio will each receive Rs 120,000.
Parliamentary probe committee records statement of Ex-Vice President’s son in cooperative fraud case
The parliamentary investigation committee has recorded the statement of Dipesh Pun, son of former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, in connection with a cooperative fraud case. The committee summoned Dipesh to Singha Durbar for questioning. He previously served as the secretary of the Butwal-based Supreme Savings and Credit Cooperative. Dipesh Pun was arrested on March 15 in connection with the fraud case. Following his arrest, the Rupandehi District Court released him on bail of Rs. 400,000.
Two motorcyclists killed in collision with oil tanker on East-West Highway
Two motorcyclists lost their lives in a collision with an oil tanker on Friday at Barmajhiya in Kanchanrup Municipality along the East-West Highway. The victims, identified as Mahesh Kumar Mehata, 41, and Jay Prakash Mehta, 40, were residents of Harinagara Rural Municipality-3 in Sunsari District. According to the police, Mahesh died at the scene, while Jay Prakash succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. The motorcycle (Pr 1-02047 Pa 1280), traveling westward, was struck by the oil tanker (Ko 1 Kha 7414).
Gatthaghar Accident: Govt to take action against those attacking traffic police
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take serious action and thoroughly investigate the Gatthaghar accident. The incident occurred on Thursday when a truck (Na 6 Kha 2173) struck a scooter (Ba 49 Pa 8944), dragging it for approximately 100 meters and severely mutilating the rider. The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Uttam Koirala from Okhaldhunga. The truck driver, Satendra Shrestha, 32, of Malangwa Municipality-2, fled the scene but was later arrested and is currently being held at the Police Circle in Thimi. Following the accident, locals staged a protest and a clash erupted between security personnel and local people.
Dudhkoshi flood sweeps away dozen houses, hotels, school, and clinic in Solukhumbu
A devastating flood in the Dudhkoshi River swept away a person, along with a dozen houses and public buildings, in the Khumbu region on Friday afternoon. The identity of the missing individual has yet to be confirmed, according to police reports. The flood, which struck Thame in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, resulted in the destruction of six houses, five hotels, a school, and a clinic, as reported by the District Police Office. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dwarika Prasad Ghimire stated that seven additional houses in the area are now at high risk due to the flooding.
