Newly-appointed Foreign Minister reaffirms Nepal’s commitment to Panchasheel principles

KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Arzoo Rana Deuba, affirmed Nepal’s commitment to the Non-Aligned Movement and the Principles of Panchasheel.

Speaking to the media after assuming office at the Ministry on Monday, Dr. Deuba emphasized that Nepal, situated between two large landmasses, must maintain balanced relations with all nations, including its neighbors.

She highlighted the significant role of the Foreign Ministry in the country’s prosperity and expressed her intention to focus on advancing economic diplomacy for national development.

Dr. Deuba stressed the importance of implementing the various treaties, agreements, and commitments Nepal has made, noting that effective implementation could enhance economic diplomacy and serve the nation’s interests.

She directed ministry employees to uphold good governance and effectively implement policies to provide better services.

Additionally, Dr. Deuba pledged to intensify efforts to rescue Nepalese citizens stranded in conflict-affected countries.

A central committee member of the Nepali Congress, Dr. Deuba is also a member of the House of Representatives and President of the Agriculture, Cooperatives, and Natural Resources Committee under the Federal Parliament. This marks her first tenure as a minister.

An activist for women’s rights, reproductive health rights, property rights, and equal representation of women in state agencies, Dr. Deuba has been working on women’s rights issues since 1996, when she established the Safe Motherhood Network.

Born in Kathmandu in January 1962, she holds a PhD in Organizational Psychology from Punjab University, Chandigarh, India.
