Speaker Ghimire calls for crackdown on illicit trade at eastern checkpoint

JHAPA: House of Representatives Speaker Devraj Ghimire has urged businesspersons to deter illicit trade through the eastern checkpoint at Kakadbhitta.

During an all-side discussion organized by Mechinagar municipality on contemporary issues, including border security, Speaker Ghimire emphasized the importance of not engaging in illegal trade along the porous border with India. He expressed concern over the loss of state revenue due to the increase in illegal trade.

The Speaker called on the government to resume tourist mobility from third countries, which has been halted due to the COVID pandemic.

Mechinagar municipality mayor Gopal Chandra Budhathoki presented a 15-point demand to the Speaker, including measures to facilitate transactions at the eastern checkpoint Kakadbhitta and arrangements for on-arrival visas for Bangladeshi tourists.

At the event, Mechi Customs Chief Ram Prasad Regmi reported revenue loss due to coal imports via the eastern checkpoint entering the country through other checkpoints adjacent to Bihar state in India.
