Government shifts work style to revive economy: Finance Minister Pun

KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun has emphasized that while the government’s policies remain unchanged, there will be a shift in work style to rejuvenate the national economy from its current downturn.

Speaking at the ‘RBBL Management Conference 2024’ held in the federal capital today, Finance Minister Pun pledged to create employment opportunities within the country and stem the outflow of youth.

“While there won’t be fundamental alterations in government policies, there will be adjustments in work methodologies, especially with changes in Cabinet members. Our policies are rooted in the constitution, but altering work styles can yield different outcomes,” he underscored.

Acknowledging the prevalent perception of systemic changes without corresponding improvements in people’s lives, Minister Pun vowed to address youth disillusionment and complaints by reviewing and enhancing government operations.

Minister Pun condemned the trend of flouting banking regulations, stressing that accusations of involvement in criminal activities should be substantiated with evidence rather than mere associations.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to good governance, economic prosperity, and social justice, highlighting the need for enhanced public finance management and action to tackle economic challenges stemming from issues in the microfinance and cooperative sectors.

Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari cautioned against misusing the resources mobilized by the banking sector and urged banks to prioritize lending to productive sectors. Adhikari stressed the importance of honesty and accountability within the banking and financial sectors to counter various challenges.

Chairman of the Nepal Bankers’ Association, Sunil KC, acknowledged the challenges faced by the banking sector but emphasized its resilience.

Rastriya Banijya Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Kiran Kumar Shrestha expressed optimism that the conference would facilitate constructive discussions on banking and financial sector challenges, contributing to the national economy’s revival.
