BIRGUNJ: The Nepal Water Supply Corporation in Birgunj is gearing up to disconnect the water supply to 278 taps located in public areas across Birgunj Metropolitan City.

These taps were installed by the Corporation in various public locations spanning from ward no. 1 to 19 at the beginning of the current fiscal year 2080/81 BS, following a request from Birgunj Metropolis.

Engineer Niran Maharjan, Chief at Nepal Water Supply Corporation, stated that the Corporation is preparing to cut off the water supply lines due to the non-payment of tariffs by Birgunj Metropolis since the installation of the water taps. The outstanding amount owed by the Metropolis is approximately Rs 4.4 million. Despite a written notice on October 12, 2023, requesting payment, the Metropolis has yet to settle the dues.

Chief Maharjan expressed that the Corporation has been left with no choice but to disconnect the water supply to these taps, as repeated requests to clear the outstanding dues have gone unanswered by the Metropolitan City.

Additionally, the Corporation has already disconnected the water supply to 23 consumers who have not paid their drinking water charges for an extended period. In the first phase, the Corporation has initiated the disconnection of water supply to 542 consumers who owe more than Rs 50,000 in water charges, listing them in a blacklist.

The total outstanding tariff from consumers amounts to approximately Rs 122.5 million, as per the Corporation’s records. The move to disconnect water supply serves as a measure to enforce payment and maintain financial stability within the Corporation.
