26th National Earthquake Safety Day: Reflecting through images

KATHMANDU: Nepal, situated in a seismic zone, commemorates the 26th National Earthquake Safety Day today.

The Himalayan nation faces earthquake challenges annually, with historical records reminding us of significant seismic events.

In the year 1990 BS, on Magh 2, Nepal experienced a catastrophic earthquake, an event only vividly remembered by a few. Since then, the country encounters mega-earthquakes approximately every 60 to 70 years.

Preceding 1990, Nepal witnessed earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 in 1218, 1316, 1465, 1737, 1824, 1867, and 1880.

Post-1990, a devastating earthquake struck in 2023, claiming 80 lives, followed by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in 2045 that resulted in the loss of 750 lives.

In 2068 Ashoj 1, an earthquake claimed the lives of 111 people. On Baishak 12, 2072, a mega earthquake claimed 8,500 lives, leaving iconic landmarks like Dharahara and Basantapur in ruins.

More recently, in Kartik 17, 2080, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Jajarkot, causing significant casualties.

As the nation observes the 26th National Earthquake Safety Day, let us reflect on these seismic events through images, acknowledging the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of future challenges.
