Businessmen of Nepalese origin constitute Nepali Chamber in New York



KATHMANDU: Nepali and American businessmen of Nepalese origin doing business in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut have come together to form the Greater New York Nepali Chamber of Commerce.

This organization includes 74 business companies and aims to address the needs and concerns of Nepali and Nepali-speaking entrepreneurs in the area.

After a year of preparation, a General Assembly elected a seven-member working committee headed by Pradeep Shrestha as Chairman.

The official announcement was made during a New York event celebrating the Nepali New Year.

The organization’s working committee comprises members Chhepak Dorje Gurung, Chhiring Gurung, Dr. Sulochana Gurung, Deepak Shrestha, Nabin Chhetri, and Nischal Baskota.

Nepali Ambassador to the United States, Lok Bahadur Thapa, representing the Nepalese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was the chief guest at the announcement meeting.

The event also included notable attendees such as Nepal Government Tourism Promoter Gokul Shrestha, New York State Assembly Member Steven Raga, Queens Borough Deputy President Ebony Yong, New York City Mayor’s Office Small Business Services Deputy Director Haris Khan, Supreme Court Judge Cassandra Johnson, and other organization representatives.

During the announcement meeting, Pradeep Shrestha, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said that the organization was created to address the challenges faced by businessmen of Nepalese origin in New York.

He added that there are over 1,000 Nepali-origin businesspeople in the area and that the process of adding new members to the organization has begun.

Ambassador Thapa highlighted Nepal’s investment-friendly environment and urged the businessmen to expand their skills and investments in Nepal.

He encouraged them to participate in the upcoming investment conference and stated that the government of Nepal is willing to support them in any way possible.

The organization held its first general meeting on March 24, 2024, after nearly two years of informal discussions and legal processes.

Additionally, an eight-member advisory committee was established, including members Amit Pratap Shah, Galgen Nuru Sherpa, Khagendra JC, Manita Devi Gurung, Navaraj KC, Pasang Nuru Sherpa, Sameer Maharjan, and Urgen Sherpa.
