Internal translocation of Rhinos underway in Chitwan National Park

CHITWAN: The Chitwan National Park has initiated the internal relocation of six rhinos starting today.

This decision comes amidst an increased population of the endangered species in the western region of the park, prompting officials to redistribute them to the eastern belt.

Chief Conservation Officer of Chitwan National Park, Dil Bahadur Purja Pun, stated that the translocation of rhinos commenced on Friday, with a workforce of 60 individuals, including elephants, technical personnel, Nepal Army personnel, and other officials mobilized for the task.

Ganesh Prasad Tiwari, Information Officer of Chitwan National Park, confirmed the relocation of six rhinos, citing a study report prepared by the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation as the basis for the decision.

The rhinos, aged between 8 to 20, will be relocated to the Dibyapuri post within the national park, with an estimated timeframe of approximately two weeks for completion.

This strategic relocation aims to facilitate intermingling between rhinos from the eastern and western regions of the park, potentially enhancing rhino reproduction rates.

Officials have prioritized relocating rhinos that pose a threat to human settlements, with careful consideration given to maintaining a balanced ratio of male and female rhinos.
