No chance of monarchy restoration in Nepal: NC President Deuba
Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has ruled out the possibility of restoration of monarchy in Nepal. Speaking at the ninth memorial day of former Prime Minister and Constituent Assembly member, Surya Bahadur Thapa, organized by the Surya Bahadur Thapa Foundation today, Deuba highlighted the importance of making the current system more inclusive, stating unequivocally that there is no possibility of monarchy restoration.
Government prorogues winter session of House
The government has decided to prorogue the winter session of parliament effective from midnight Sunday. Reading the notice issued by the Office of the President during the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) today, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire officially declared the conclusion of the winter session. The government’s recommendation to prorogue the House session from midnight on April 14 was ratified by President Ram Chandra Poudel.
SC orders reinstatement of Nagarik Unmukti Party’s Sudurpaschim Lawmaker, Indira Giri
The Supreme Court has directed the reinstatement of Sudurpaschim Province lawmaker, Indira Giri. Following the Supreme Court’s interim order preventing Giri’s removal from office, she has been reinstated. SC single bench of Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut issued an interim order reinstating Giri as a member of parliament. Previously, amid escalating conflicts within the party, Nagarik Unmukti Party Chair Ranjita Shrestha had written to the province Speaker requesting Giri’s removal from her position.
Laxman Kishor Chaudhary asserts claim to Sudurpaschim’s CM post
Laxman Kishor Chaudhary, representing the Nagarik Unmukti Party, has formally declared his candidacy for the position of Chief Minister (CM) of Sudurpaschim Province on Sunday. Chaudhary’s bid for the CM post has garnered support from a coalition comprising 18 lawmakers from the Nepali Congress, six from the Nagarik Unmukti Party, and four from the CPN (Unified Socialist).
Nagarik Unmukti’s Kailash Chaudhary also claims majority support to become Sudurpaschim CM
Nagarik Unmukti Party’s Kailash Chaudhary has also claimed the support of the majority required to be the Chief Minister of Sudurpaschim province. Kailash belongs to Nagarik Unmukti Chair Ranjita Shrestha faction in the Sudurpaschim province. He has claimed the support of the CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist Center, Nagarik Unmukti Party and one independent lawmaker’s support.
Nepali Congress objects to govt’s prorogation of House Session
Nepal’s main opposition party, Nepali Congress, has voiced strong objection to the government’s decision to prematurely end the current session of the Federal Parliament. In a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party held today, serious concern was expressed regarding the government’s recommendation to conclude the budget session prematurely, despite ample time remaining.
Sindur Jatra observed with great zeal in Bhaktapur
The Sindoor Jatra festival was celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm in Madhyapur Thimi on Sunday. Among the various processions celebrated during the Bisket Jatra, Sindoor Jatra stands out, featuring 32 chariots. During the procession, devotees carry the main deity on a chariot and spread vermilion powder along with playing traditional musical instrument Dhime Baja. As the procession passes through every square, crossroad, houses, and temples, it is customary to smear sindoor on windows, doors, and roofs, and to welcome the procession with showering of flowers.
Govt adopts policy to increase expenditure through budget transfers
The Ministry of Finance has adopted a strategy of budget transfers, program amendments, and bolstering expenditures from allocations categorized under ‘miscellaneous’ headings. As per the office of Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun, in the last month alone, government agencies have disbursed Rs 1.63 billion through budget transfers. Additionally, programs worth Rs 2.63 billion have been revised, and Rs 36.50 billion from miscellaneous expenditures has been utilized.
