No chance of monarchy restoration in Nepal: NC President Deuba

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has ruled out the possibility of restoration of monarchy in Nepal.

Speaking at the ninth memorial day of former Prime Minister and Constituent Assembly member, Surya Bahadur Thapa, organized by the Surya Bahadur Thapa Foundation today, Deuba highlighted the importance of making the current system more inclusive, stating unequivocally that there is no possibility of monarchy restoration.

Former Prime Minister Deuba reiterated that reinstating the monarchy is impractical under the present circumstances.

“Nepal has now embraced a federal democratic republican governance system. Despite some advocating for the return of the monarchy, restoring the king is now an unattainable goal. Therefore, it’s imperative to fortify the current system through practical measures,” he emphasized.

Deuba also acknowledged the need for amendments to address shortcomings in the constitution, while recognizing Surya Bahadur Thapa’s pivotal role in shaping Nepal’s political landscape.

Addressing the event, Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Dr. Prakash Chandra Lohoni lauded Thapa’s political acumen and versatility, urging all political factions to unite and steer the country in the right direction.

Nepali Congress central member Arjun Narsingh KC highlighted Thapa’s significant contributions to Nepal’s political and administrative spheres.

Sunil Bahadur Thapa, another central member of Nepali Congress, emphasized Thapa’s instrumental role in shaping Nepal’s political system, urging others to follow his example.

Janata Samajwadi Party leader Pradeep Yadav praised Thapa’s advocacy for the rights of the Madhesi people, noting his simplicity and noble ideals.

Former ambassador Surya Prasad Shrestha, senior advocate Krishna Prasad Bhandari, Prof. Lokraj Baral, Kathmandu University registrar Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle, and others concurred that Surya Bahadur Thapa was an astute politician with a profound impact on Nepal’s political landscape.
