NC protests over appointment of Rabi Lamichhane as Home Minister amid fraud investigation

KATHMANDU: The main opposition, Nepali Congress (NC) has voiced strong opposition to the appointment of Rabi Lamichhane as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, citing an ongoing investigation into cooperative fraud.

During today’s session of the House of Representatives, Nepali Congress MP Badri Pandey expressed dismay at Prime Minister Dahal’s decision to appoint Lamichhane while under investigation.

Pandey highlighted the ethical dilemma posed by having a Home Minister embroiled in an investigation that falls under their jurisdiction, raising concerns about potential interference with the inquiry process.

Lawmaker Pandey questioned how a Home Minister facing serious allegations such as improper investments in cooperative entities, questionable loans, and irregularities in membership could effectively carry out legal actions against offenders.

He urged Prime Minister Dahal to address governmental challenges and reconsider appointments of controversial figures.

Pandey further criticized the perceived shielding of high-profile individuals involved in massive fraud, likening the situation to using the Home Minister’s position as a defense mechanism, allowing major offenders to evade justice while focusing on minor cases.

The Nepali Congress’s protest underscores growing concerns over the government’s handling of corruption allegations and the appointment of officials implicated in ongoing investigations.
