Constitutional Council fails to recommend Chief Justice

KATHMANDU: The meeting of the Constitutional Council, held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Friday, ended without reaching a decision on the recommendation for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for Monday.

The Council, chaired by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, included key figures such as Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, leader of the main opposition party; Speaker Devraj Ghimire; Chief Justice Bishwambhar Shrestha; National Assembly Speaker Narayan Dahal; and Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar.

Chief Justice Shrestha is set to retire on October 5 due to the age limit of 65 years.

According to Article 284 (3) of the Constitution, the Council is required to recommend a successor at least one month before the current Chief Justice’s retirement.

However, the Council has not yet finalized its recommendation.

The Judicial Council has provided a list of eight potential candidates for the position of Chief Justice.

The candidates are Prakashman Singh Raut, Sapana Pradhan Mall, Prakash Kumar Dhungana, Kumar Regmi, Hari Prasad Phuyal, Manoj Kumar Sharma, Kumar Chudal, and Nakul Subedi.

Given that Prakashman Singh Raut is the most senior among the nominees, there is a possibility that his name may be put forward for recommendation.
