Speaker cannot dictate MPs’ speech: RPP Chair Lingden

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden has challenged the authority of the Speaker in restricting what Members of Parliament (MPs) can say during emergency sessions in the House of Representatives.

In an emergency meeting of the House on Tuesday, Lingden criticized Speaker Devraj Ghimire for attempting to control MPs’ contributions, arguing that such restrictions are unacceptable.

“It is unacceptable for the Speaker to dictate whether MPs can speak or on what topics they may address,” Lingden stated.

He further emphasized, “People’s representatives should be able to speak freely. While the Speaker has the authority to prevent discussions that contravene the constitution or parliamentary rules, it is inappropriate to selectively determine which topics can or cannot be discussed.”
