Groundwater irrigation expansion surpasses targets in Jhapa

BHADRAPUR: The area served by the groundwater irrigation project has seen significant growth in Jhapa district.

In the fiscal year 2080/81, the project expanded irrigation coverage by 1,200 additional hectares.

Ishwor Thapa, Information Officer at the project, reported a 100 percent financial progress with an investment of Rs 104 million, and a physical progress of 134.17 percent.

The project exceeded expectations, achieving notable physical progress in the past fiscal year.

As part of the expansion, 15 deep tube wells and 17 irrigation structures were built to provide water to areas previously without canal irrigation access.

Despite these achievements, budget constraints are impeding the goal of extending groundwater irrigation to 7,000 hectares of land within five years.
