KATHMANDU: The New Year 2081 has started from Saturday.

Every Baishakh 1, the first day of Bikram Sambat calendar, marks the beginning of the new year in Nepali culture.

According to the solar calendar, Baishakh 1 is celebrated as the new year, while according to the lunar calendar, the new year falls on the first day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra.

The Bikram Sambat is considered as the calendar constructed based on the Hindu Panchanga, and is regarded as authoritative.

During the occasion of the new year, there is an exchange of goodwill and greetings among people. The last evening of the previous year is celebrated with friends, brothers, and beloved ones, making merry and welcoming the new year.

Those with religious faiths visit temples and monasteries to offer prayers.

Reflecting on past deeds, they resolve to overcome weaknesses and embark on their endeavors with renewed enthusiasm and vigor in the new year.
