KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has upheld its interim order, preventing the formation of a new Land Commission.
Justices Anand Mohan Bhattarai and Vinod Sharma, constituting a division bench, announced the continuation of the earlier interim order issued by the Court.
Previously, a single bench of the Supreme Court had issued an interim order to halt the formation of the commission, leading to the issuance of another interim order by a single bench.
During Friday’s session, Assistant Attorney General Suryaraj Dahal presented the Cabinet’s decision to the division bench.
The court deemed the arguments put forth for the formation of the Land Commission insufficient to justify the establishment of a new commission.
On March 21, a cabinet meeting had resolved to dissolve the existing Land Commission and establish a new one.
In recent times, each successive government has dissolved the Land Commission and reshaped it to their advantage.
Thus far, a total of 18 commissions have been formed.
During the last administration led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, the government dissolved the existing Commission under Devi Gyawali’s leadership and formed a new one under the leadership of Keshav Niraula on September 15, 2021.
