Maha Astami and Maha Nawami festivals observed today

The Maha Astami and Maha Nawami festivals were celebrated today with fervent worship of Goddess Durga Bhawani and various offerings.

This year, Mahaastami and Mahanawami coincide, both occurring on the same day.

According to the lunar calendar, this festival is observed on the ninth day of the waxing moon in the month of Asoj and is part of the 10-day Bada Dashain festival.

Special rituals were performed for Durga Bhawani, and ‘jamara’ (barley shoots) that have been germinated are offered at various shrines.

He-goats, ducks, roosters, and he-buffalos are sacrificed at temples dedicated to the goddesses.

Around 1.3 million people leave Kathmandu Valley for Dashain

As many as 1.3 million people have departed from the Kathmandu Valley to celebrate Dashain in just one week, according to the National Federation of Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs.

This figure was reported as of today (Friday).

Bijay Swar, President of the Federation, noted that approximately 1.8 million people were expected to leave the valley for the festivities.

The Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology has urged parents and guardians to ensure their children receive eye check-ups after birth, before starting school, and annually thereafter.

Symptoms such as reddish eyes, blurred vision, eye pain, teary eyes, eye discharge, and uneven eye sizes require prompt medical attention.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms is advised to visit nearby health facilities or hospitals.

On the occasion of World Sight Day 2024 on October 10, the Institute stressed the need for eye check-ups for children, especially for those with white spots on their eyes, premature births, or low birth weight.

Dashain: Nepal turns to India for meat, China for toothpicks

As the country prepares for Dashain, the biggest festival in Nepal, locals are immersed in celebration and culinary traditions, which prominently feature fish and meat.

Despite advancements in agriculture and animal husbandry, Nepal continues to import significant quantities of fish and meat from abroad.

Over the past five years, Nepal has imported meat worth over 13 billion rupees.

In the financial year 2019/20 alone, fish and meat imports amounted to approximately 2.77 billion rupees.

The following year, 2020/21, saw an increase with imports reaching 3.34 billion rupees.

Former Chair of Council of Ministers Regmi calls for not making Dashain celebrations extravagant

Former Chair of the Council of Ministers, Khil Raj Regmi, has extended best wishes to Nepalis at home and abroad on the occasion of the Dashain festival.

In his message of the best wishes today, the former Chief Justice urged one and all to celebrate the festival within their means, instead of promoting extravagance that can lead to economic burdens.

The Bijaya Dashami festival carries significant values and reflects the essence of Nepali customs and culture.

It is also a time for family bonding and reunions and enhancing social goodwill, he said.
