Russia grants citizenship to families of Indian nationals killed in Ukraine war

KATHMANDU: Russia has begun granting citizenship to the family members of Indian nationals killed in the war against Ukraine.

According to BBC Hindi, one family has already agreed to accept Russian citizenship.

Aswin Bhai Mangukiya told the BBC that he received INR 4,500,000 and is expecting the remaining compensation of INR 13 million by this month.

Mangukiya’s 23-year-old son was killed on February 21 in a missile attack.

He had been influenced by an agent to go to Russia with the promise of a job as a helper in the Russian army.

However, upon arrival, he was sent to the frontlines of the battle against Ukraine.

Mangukiya has also agreed to accept Russian citizenship.

In a similar case, Mohammad Imran, the brother of Mohammad Afsana, told the BBC that Russia has promised compensation and citizenship to Afsana’s family.

“Afsana’s wife and his two children are to be granted citizenship. They have been summoned to complete the paper works.”

During his recent two-day visit to Russia, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of Indian nationals enlisted in the Russian army with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
