Informal talks underway to resolve parliament obstruction

KATHMANDU: Leaders from major political parties are engaged in internal and informal discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing obstruction of federal parliament sessions.

During the inaugural day of the budget session of the federal parliament last Friday, the main opposition Nepali Congress disrupted proceedings, demanding the formation of a parliamentary probe commission to investigate embezzlement in cooperatives.

Consequently, both houses of parliament failed to conduct scheduled business.

In response, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ reportedly engaged in discussions with leaders, including those from the CPN UML, to explore avenues for consensus and ensure the smooth functioning of parliament.

Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress convened a meeting of its office bearers today.

The party accused Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane of involvement in cooperative fund embezzlement and reiterated its demand for the formation of a parliamentary probe committee.

Speaking to Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), CPN (MC) Chief Whip Hitraj Pande stated that although no agreement has been reached thus far to resolve the parliamentary obstruction, the government remains committed to finding a solution.

Similarly, CPN UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula expressed optimism that ongoing discussions among top leaders would lead to progress.

Both the Upper and Lower Houses are scheduled to reconvene on May 14.
