Sudurpaschim Province set to welcome new CM from Nagarik Unmukti Party

KATHMANDU: The Sudurpaschim Province is poised to see a new Chief Minister (CM) from the Nagarik Unmukti Party, following an agreement within the ruling alliance at the federal level.

The agreement has paved the way for the Nagarik Unmukti Party to take the helm of the provincial government.

Reports suggest that Kailash Chaudhary is the likely candidate to assume the role of CM for Sudurpaschim Province on behalf of the Nagarik Unmukti Party.

Presently, the party holds six lawmakers in the province after a recent dispute within the party that saw Chairman Ranjita Shrestha dismissing Indira Giri from her position for defying directives.

As per the agreement, the Nagarik Unmukti Party is entitled to the CM position, along with one ministerial and one state ministerial portfolio.

The Sudurpaschim Provincial Assembly comprises 51 members, with a majority of 26 required to form a new government.

The ruling alliance, commanding a majority with 31 lawmakers, consists of 11 from CPN (Maoist Center), 10 from CPN-UML, six from Nagarik Unmukti Party, and four from CPN (Unified Socialist).

In contrast, there are 18 lawmakers from the Nepali Congress, alongside one representative each from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party and an independent candidate.
