KATHMANDU: As the countdown begins for one of Kathmandu Valley’s most majestic chariot festivals, the Seto Machindranath Jatra, anticipation fills the air for the upcoming three-day celebration starting on April 16.
Recognized also as the ‘Jana Baha Dyah Jatra’, this vibrant procession pays homage to the revered deity, Seto Machindranath, known as the God of Rain.
The bustling street of Durbarmarg in Kathmandu is alive with the energetic preparations for the construction of the magnificent chariot that will carry Seto Machindranath through the city during the festivities.
Each day of the procession brings a unique spectacle as the towering chariot journeys through the city streets, accompanied by the resonant echoes of soldiers performing a ceremonial rifle salute.
Legend has it that during the reign of Yakshya Malla, the King of Kantipur, a sacred ritual involved bathing in a holy river and paying homage at Swayambhunath, believed to hold the power to grant passage to heaven after death. Intrigued by this belief, Yama, the God of Death, ventured to the temple.
However, upon his return, Yama found himself ensnared by King Malla and his guru, who sought immortality. Despite his divine nature, Yama found himself unable to escape and sought solace in prayer to Arya Abalokiteswar, also known as Seto Machhindranath, for liberation.
In response to Yama’s plea, Seto Machhindranath appeared, his form radiant and serene, with eyes half-closed. He imparted wisdom to the king, instructing him to erect a temple at the confluence of the Kalmati and Bagmati rivers and to initiate the grand chariot procession.
Through this procession, Seto Machhindranath vowed to bestow blessings of contentment and longevity upon the people. Since that fateful encounter, this revered three-day procession has become a cherished tradition.
Capturing the essence of this cultural extravaganza, Khabarhub’s photojournalist Chirayu Shakya ventured to Durbarmarg today, providing a glimpse into the fervent preparations taking place.
As the city eagerly awaits the commencement of the Seto Machindranath Jatra, the spirit of devotion and celebration permeates the air, promising an unforgettable experience for all who partake in this cherished tradition.
