Govt protecting human rights: Finance Minister Paudel

LALITPUR: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Bishnu Prasad Paudel, has emphasized that the government is fully committed to protecting human rights.

Speaking at an event organized by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to mark the 76th Human Rights Day, DPM Paudel highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen the NHRC’s role.

“The state and political parties are dedicated to safeguarding human rights. The government is focused on implementing Supreme Court verdicts and ensuring that transitional justice mechanisms are victim-friendly. We are also ready to make the NHRC autonomous and more empowered,” DPM Paudel stated.

He added that the government remains committed to protecting human rights and ensuring adequate physical and financial resources for the NHRC’s operations.

NHRC Chairperson Top Bahadur Magar stressed the need for legal reforms to address laws that do not align with human rights principles, especially with regard to migrant workers, whose protection is a sensitive issue.

UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy, commended Nepal’s role at COP29 and its ongoing work in transitional justice.
