KATHMANDU: A meeting among top leaders of the ruling coalition has led to a decision to enhance the effectiveness of both the government and parliament.
CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula said that the two-hour meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence, Baluwatar, focused on making both the government and the House more functional.
The ruling parties had been criticized for failing to form a Common Minimum Program (CMP) even two months after the formation of the government.
Despite this, no decision on the CMP was made during the meeting.
Bartaula emphasized that the formation of the government by the two major parties does not preclude the involvement of other parties.
“There are no prohibitions against other parties participating. We are engaged in discussions to proceed with a unified approach based on common sense,” he said.
He assured that the government would adopt an inclusive approach in its operations, reflecting a consensus-based method for making decisions.
The effectiveness of parliament and the government was the primary focus of the meeting.
Discussions included finalizing pending las, with 16 out of 40 bills already registered and others under consideration.
Bartaula noted, “We have talked about enhancing our role in parliament and in parliamentary committees, aiming to improve the overall effectiveness of both government and parliament.”
The meeting also addressed concerns about opposition efforts to undermine the government and create confusion among the public.
“There has been talk of countering attempts to destabilize Nepal with false information. We will discuss the minimum common program among all partner parties and incorporate the views of all involved.”
Nepali Congress leader Shyam Ghimire added that the CMP would be based on the seven-point agreement earlier reached between Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.
He noted, “The program will be formed on these seven foundational points, with further details to be worked out. While currently only UML and Congress are in the task group, we plan to include other parties as well. The government will operate according to this seven-point framework, ensuring that Congress remains aligned with this approach.”
