TOKYO: Nepali Ambassador to Japan, Dr. Durga Bahadur Subedi, has lauded the remarkable contribution of the Nepali society in Japan towards enhancing Nepal-Japan relations.

Ambassador Subedi emphasized that the Nepali community in Japan has played a crucial role in fostering cultural, religious, and people-to-people ties between Nepal and Japan.

Notably, the Nepali community in Japan stands out for its organization and prosperity compared to Nepalis in other countries.

Diplomatic relations between Nepal and Japan were formally established on September 1, 1956.

Subsequently, a year later, the Nepali embassy was established in Tokyo, followed by Japan opening its embassy in Kathmandu three years later.

Dr. Subedi highlighted Japan’s consistent support for Nepal’s economic and social development without any ulterior motives.

He attributed the significant presence of Nepalis in Japan to the strong and close relationship maintained between the public and the government.

The Everest International School in Tokyo, offering education based on the Nepali curriculum, has played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations at the grassroots level.

The school’s principal, Bishnu Prasad Bhatt, emphasized that Japan has recognized the institution as an international-level school.

Currently, the school has 450 students, including Japanese nationals, enrolled.

Ambassador Dr. Subedi commended the Nepali community’s efforts in operating a school in Tokyo that teaches according to the Nepali curriculum.

It is estimated that approximately 163,000 Nepalese reside in Japan, engaged in various professions, employment, and educational pursuits.

Higher education and restaurant businesses attract a significant number of Nepalis, with around 40,000 Nepali students pursuing higher education in Japan and approximately 800 Nepali restaurants in operation.

Ambassador Subedi noted that Nepali cuisine has played a vital role in introducing Nepal to Japan, with its diverse range of delicacies.

Established in 1990, the Nepali Society in Japan has been actively working to promote the interests and welfare of Nepali nationals residing in Japan for various reasons, including education, employment, and business endeavors.
