KATHMANDU: The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu will remain closed at night from today until March 31, 2025, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
During this period, the CAAN plans to maintain a duty time of 6 hours and 50 minutes, with staff scheduled in three shifts according to current arrangements.
The Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project will expand the parallel taxiway on the southwest side of the airport, as well as the international apron on the north side and the hangar apron on the east side.
The project is set to allocate Rs 15 billion for these upgrades. During the construction period, all flights between 10 PM and 8 AM will be suspended.
Currently, the airport operates from 6 AM to 2 AM.
Project head Dipendra Shrestha stated that the flight restrictions are necessary to ensure safety during the upgrades.
Nepal currently has three operational international airports. Following 74 years since the establishment of Tribhuvan International Airport, both Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa and Pokhara International Airport have recently begun operations.
While the airport is closed, construction will take place on structures such as the parking lot, taxiway, and hangar.
During this time, only a limited number of employees will be on duty for emergency situations, while others will be assigned to alternative tasks.
