KATHMANDU: Five Russian mountaineers lost their lives while attempting to summit Mt Dhaulagiri.
Rakesh Gurung, the Director of the Department of Tourism, stated that their bodies were discovered at an elevation of 7,600 meters on Tuesday morning.
The group, consisting of 14 Russian climbers, had arrived in Nepal around three weeks prior for an expedition organized by IAM Trekking & Expeditions.
Eight members of the group lost contact during their ascent on Sunday night.
Gurung noted that efforts to send a helicopter for a search operation on Monday were hindered by poor weather conditions.
However, a helicopter from Heli Everest successfully located two climbers at Base Camp and one at Camp I during the Tuesday morning search.
The climber at Camp I is receiving treatment, while the other two are preparing to return to Kathmandu.
During the same operation, the helicopter also discovered the bodies of the five deceased climbers at 7,600 meters.
Gurung stated that they will coordinate with the relevant trekking agency to arrange for the retrieval of the climbers’ bodies and facilitate their return to Russia.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Bharat Shrestha from the District Police Office in Myagdi confirmed that the bodies remain on the mountain and emphasized the need for skilled personnel to recover them.
The deceased climbers have been identified as Aleksandr Dusheyko, Oleg Kruglov, Chistikov Vladimir, Nosenko Mikhail, and Shpilevoz Dmitri.
