KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has expressed concerns about air safety in Nepal, citing a series of frequent air crashes as evidence that the country’s sky is not safe.

Speaking to the media today following the recent Council of Ministers meeting, Gurung emphasized the need for a systematic approach to uncover the root causes of these incidents and address them effectively.

He noted that the recurring crashes have negatively impacted the tourism sector and could harm Nepal’s international reputation.

During the Council of Ministers meeting on August 7, it was decided to form an investigation commission to look into the recent Nuwakot helicopter crash.

The helicopter, with the call sign 9N-AJD and operated by Air Dynasty Heli Service Pvt Ltd, crashed in Suryachaur, Shivapuri Rural Municipality, Nuwakot district on Wednesday.

The government spokesperson announced the formation of a three-member investigation commission, chaired by senior pilot Subas Thapa of the Nepali Army.

The commission is tasked with investigating the accident and submitting a report with recommendations within 30 days of its formation.

Minister Gurung extended condolences to the families of the four Chinese and one Nepali citizen who lost their lives in the crash.

He criticized the government’s previous approach, which he said was limited to forming investigation commissions without addressing the underlying issues.

Gurung assured that the government is now focused on determining whether the problem lies in government policies, management practices, technology, or the overall air safety environment, and is committed to finding effective solutions.
