KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Thapa stated that his party would remain in the opposition role within the federal parliament until 2084.

He made this declaration while addressing a program in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Thapa explained that despite NC’s commitment to remain in government following the elections, some political parties in the coalition forgot their promises, leading NC to the opposition.

He affirmed that NC would neither attempt to form a government nor topple one until 2084.

General Secretary Thapa emphasized that while playing the role of the opposition, NC will not cease dialogues with the CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Center.

He mentioned that as the largest party in the parliament and the leader in the constitution-making process, NC holds certain responsibilities and will engage in discussions with other political parties regarding constitutional amendments.

“We are now in opposition, not by choice but due to circumstances,” Thapa said, adding, “Our central committee will meet in a few days to make a formal decision. We have had extensive discussions at the leadership level and reached some understandings. NC will remain in the opposition role within the federal parliament until 2084.”

Thapa accused UML Chair and former Prime Minister KP Oli of making disrespectful remarks towards Education, Science, and Technology Minister Sumana Shrestha, claiming Oli’s comments were discriminatory and hateful against women.

General Secretary Thapa also stressed the need to revive the tradition of party discussions and stated that NC Kathmandu must move forward with renewed vigor.

He aimed a remark at Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair and Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane, stating that being a new political party does not exempt one from accountability.
